About John Kinyon

CNVC Certified Trainer from El Sobrante, California, USA

John has been training with NVC for 10 years and has been developing and evolving an approach to mediating conflict for the past 7 years with colleague Ike Lasater, beginning with a journey together to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to work with Afghan tribal elders in 2002, shortly after the bombings following 9/11. From this experience they saw first hand that despite cultural differences and multiple language translations, the NVC mediation process produced connection and collaborative resolution, even with a real dispute that came alive in the room during the training.

About Stephanie Bachmann Mattei, Ph.D.

NVC Facilitator from Massachusetts, USA

Stephanie Bachmann Mattei was born and raised in Florence, Italy, where she earned her Bachelor in Languages and a Ph.D. in Philosophy. Stephanie moved to the USA in 1993, when she married her beloved husband, who is from Naples, Italy.

Together they are parenting their 3 self-educated children: two biological boys, and one daughter, who joined the family through adoption.

Stephanie’s core intertwined themes in life are: spirituality, parenting and healing.

On the practical level this meant serving at a children’s hospital as a teen, studying Eastern Spiritual Psychologies and Indian Philosophies and embracing the life of a sannyasin in her twenties, as well as, -once she became a mother, serving for over 10 years as a volunteer Leader with La Leche League International, becoming a BCI Certified Parenting Educator, and serving as an NVC based teleclass facilitator and family coach with the Consciously Parenting Project, an organization that ties love-based parenting with neuroscience.

Inbal Kashtan has been the first CNVC Trainer that profoundly touched Stephanie, and introduced her to the practical applications of NVC and Parenting:

In 2006 Stephanie graduated from the “Peer Parent Leadership Program,” –created and lead by Inbal- and has been involved in this NVC program ever since: as an Assistant Trainer (07 and 08) and as an Intern Trainer (09) under the guidance of CNVC Trainer Ingrid Bauer.

Stephanie is also deeply grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve both at the “NVC And Diversity Retreat” and the “New York intensive Residential Training” as the Children’s Program Trainer.

Stephanie serves at the NVCA as a teleclass Coordinator.

“Experience shapes brain structure. Experience is biology. How we treat our children changes who they are and how they will develop.“ Dr. Daniel Siegel

You will learn how to:

  • Understand and modulate our own emotions (self-regulation)
  • Recognize when children are emotionally triggered and compassionately intervene before the fight/flight/freeze response overwhelms them
  • Learn about the power of proximity: understanding mirror neurons and neuro-physiological feedback loops
  • Shift from right/wrong mentality to the recognition that the ability to relate to others is linked to stress levels
  • Efficiently mediate conflict between children, and between children and other adults
  • Pick up practical skills for managing your own inner conflict when you are emotionally triggered by children

Overview

This 4 session course will focus on supporting people who work with children (e.g. parents, teachers, ministers, etc.) to apply the skills of NVC mediation in conflict situations that involve children. We will be working with four mediation contexts:

  1. Internal – when we are emotionally triggered as a result of working with children, or supporting children with their inner conflicts.
  2. Interpersonal -- when we as adults find ourselves in conflict with a child.
  3. Informal -- when we are stepping in to mediate a conflict that has arisen between children or between a child and another adult.
  4. Formal -- when children have agreed to have us mediate or support them in mediating their conflict.

The class sessions will involve brief didactic presentations followed by demonstration and opportunities for class participants to practice NVC mediation skills in role play situations with coaching. John will offer his experience and expertise with NVC mediation and training; Stephanie will offer her expertise with a brain science perspective on understanding and working with children (and us adults as grown children!).

The experiential learning component will include John Kinyon’s Three Chair Learning Model:

At the heart of this training is the three chair learning model. You will learn by doing and by receiving in-the-moment coaching and real-time feedback from multiple perspectives. You will have the chance to play mediator and disputant in conflict situation role plays. Roles rotate for optimal learning:

In the mediator role you will practice staying present and connected with yourself moment-by-moment and get real time coaching from John as well as feedback from those in the disputant roles and from those observing. As disputant or observer, you then have the opportunity to move into the mediator’s chair and put into practice what you have just learned. There is a back and forth flow between experiential doing and stopping to “harvest” together what is learned from the role plays.
